Environmental Impact Assessment
on a budget

A small mining operation specialised in re-opening abandoned mineral sands mines
and delivering further economic benefit and a better environmental outcome.

Pandanus was engaged to project manage the site, coordinate the sub consultancies and prepare the application for lodgement with the Department of Planning and Environment in NSW.

As subject matter experts, Pandanus also assisted with the community engagement, radiation assessment field work, social impact assessment and wrote the rehabilitation plan for the site.

Pandanus Environmental was engaged to undertake a development application and mining lease application for the site through the local council.

Due to the minerals present at the site, and their classification under NSW state legislation, the project was subsequently designated a State Significant Development and the projects assessment complexity increased, requiring a full Environmental Impact Statement to be undertaken.

Highlights of this project for us was, whilst establishing the past history of the site, connecting with the Dunghutti Elders and learning the site was previously a significant aboriginal site before it was mined. The wishes of the Elders have been included in the rehabilitation plan and the site is to be returned to a similar condition, prior to the original mining in the 1950’s.
