Moving from Approvals to Operations

The client had been developing a Bauxite resource in far north Queensland for many years and following a merger with a neighbouring business, were suddenly developing a project across two separate EIS / Approvals. The client needed Pandanus to not only manage Environmental obligations during construction, but also to bring both sets of approvals together and make sure early operations met monitoring, regulatory and rehabilitation goals.

Pandanus also took the myriads of approvals documents and distilled them down to operating procedures, whilst also mentoring junior staff in becoming a self-reliant team of professionals. Pandanus also undertook the sites first rehabilitation and oversaw the community seed collection program.

Pandanus became the site presence for Environment and Community and set out about developing the monitoring program, upgrading and modifying approvals and coming up with practical solutions to a number of unforeseen challenges brought about by construction in such a remote part of Australia. Working often with capital restrictions and sub contractors with limited mining expereince, we were able to complete the construction and begin operating on time.

Highlights of this project were taking very complex and often competing approval documents and making it work on the ground in a very challenging evironemnt. Working with the clients team, numerous and varied contractors, as well as traditional owners was a great experience and together we build a mine and all the opportunities that brings.
